HeartMath®

Learn to Regulate Stress and Build Emotional Resilience

HeartMath is a biofeedback-based approach that helps people develop greater awareness of the connection between their emotions, nervous system, and overall well-being. Using real-time feedback from heart rate variability (HRV), clients can learn practical skills to regulate stress, improve emotional balance, and increase resilience.

HeartMath can be a valuable tool for individuals experiencing anxiety, overwhelm, burnout, emotional reactivity, or chronic stress. Many clients appreciate having a concrete way to observe how their nervous system responds and practice shifting into a calmer, more regulated state.

  • HeartMath is a system of evidence-based techniques designed to help individuals improve self-regulation and emotional well-being. During a session, a small sensor is placed on the ear or finger to measure heart rate variability (HRV), which reflects the body's ability to adapt and respond to stress.

The HeartMath software provides real-time feedback, allowing clients to see how different thoughts, emotions, breathing patterns, and self-regulation strategies affect their nervous system.

  • Heart rate variability refers to the natural variation in time between heartbeats. Contrary to what many people assume, a healthy heart does not beat like a metronome. Greater variability is generally associated with flexibility, adaptability, and resilience within the nervous system.

HeartMath focuses on helping individuals increase a state known as "coherence," where the heart, brain, and nervous system function in a more synchronized and efficient manner.

  • Clients may use HeartMath to support:

    • Stress management

    • Anxiety reduction

    • Emotional regulation

    • Burnout recovery

    • Improved focus and concentration

    • Greater resilience during challenging life transitions

    • Mindfulness and self-awareness

    • Nervous system regulation

    • Improved performance under pressure

  • A HeartMath session is typically calm, interactive, and educational. Clients wear a small sensor attached to the ear or finger while viewing real-time feedback on a computer screen.

Together, we explore techniques that help shift the nervous system from a state of stress and overwhelm into a more balanced and regulated state. Clients can immediately observe how these techniques influence their physiological responses, creating opportunities for learning and practice in real time.

Many clients find the experience validating, as it provides objective feedback about stress levels while helping them develop practical skills they can use outside of therapy.

  • HeartMath may be helpful for individuals who:

    • Feel chronically stressed or overwhelmed

    • Experience anxiety or emotional reactivity

    • Struggle with burnout

    • Have difficulty slowing down racing thoughts

    • Want concrete tools for self-regulation

    • Are interested in biofeedback and nervous system education

    • Want to strengthen resilience and coping skills
